On Sunday we attended St. Andrews Church in Aviemore in the morning, it was great to meet their new minister who was in the BB himself and has been a BB chaplain for a number of years. In the afternoon we visied the Highland Folk Museum to see what life was like one hundre years ago. The Boys had the chance to visit an old school and try writing with ink and quill.
On Monday we had an activity day with Tracey and Ian from Active Spirit. We split up into 2 groups, wih one doing archery and the other spending a few hours canoeing round the whole of Loch Morlich. The groups then swapped over after lunch. A real highlight was in the afternoon when the coastguard helicopter made a stop at Glenmore Lodge. The pilots invited our Boys to have a tour of the helicopter. In the evenign we had started our inter-tent games, with Boys playing each other in games such as jenga and boules.
We started off Tuesday by visiting Craggan near Grantown on Spey for football golf. Each Boy was given a football and had to play the 9 hole golf course by kicking the ball towards the hole. After a picnic lunch we had 18 holes of putting. In the evening we went to Loch Morlich where we went mountain biking. Guided by our instructors we spent a couple of hours on the trails around Glenmore, passing over bridges, speeding downhill and going through small streams. We were rewarded with a visit to the picturesque Lochan Uaine (The Green Loch).
After breakfast on Wednesday, we set off on our main hillwalk for the week, a circuit of the hills above our campsite, taking in Craiggowrie and Creagan Gorm. We had good weather for the day’s walk, stopping for lunch atop one of the peaks. At night time we relaxed with a movie night back at Camp.
On Thursday we had a visit to the historic, but still used, barracks near Inverness, Boys had a chance to tour Fort George and visit it’s various museums and followed an audio tour. Afterwards Boys had free time in inverness to look round the shops. In the evening we visited Inverness Leisure Centre for a swimming session, with Boys spending most of their time on the 3 water flumes. Once we returned to Camp we held our quiz.
We finished the week with a visit to the Highland Wildlife Park. We started with a safari around the park in our minibus, seeing everthing from deer to bison. We then had a tour of the enclosures, visiting the monkeys, tigers and wolves. But the real highlight was seeing the polar bears up close durign their feeding time.
Back at site, the Boys tried to cross Badaguish’s pond using the aerial rings, with mixed results! We then had our BBQ and relaxed with another movie to see the week out.
