The Boys' Brigade was founded in 1883 by Sir William Alexander Smith.

William Alexander Smith was born on 27th October 1854 in Thurso in the north of Scotland. William was a Lance Corporal in the 1st Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers as well as a Sunday School teacher at North Woodside Mission in Glasgow. He noted the Boys in his class had little discipline and felt that the Boys would benefit from some of the methods used by the Volunteers. He progressed this idea and formed the Boys' Brigade, an organisation that would contnue to grow and spread throughout the World.

William Alexander Smith was knighted in 1909 by King Edward VII for his services to Boys and died in 1914.

Worldwide the Boys' Brigade currently has 500,000 members in over 60 countries.

Our Object

The Object of The Boys' Brigade is:

'The advancement of Christ's kingdom among Boys and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness.'

Our Motto

The Boys' Brigade Motto is:

'Sure & Steadfast'

The motto is taken from the bible, the book of Hebrews, Chapter 6, Verse 19.
